Therapy that works
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is:
- A talking treatment based on scientific principles.
- Effective for a wide range of problems, and recommended by Government (see www.nice.org.uk).
- Collaborative - client and therapist work together to understand problems in terms of the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
- Focused on the here and now.
- Brief - typically between 6 – 12 sessions, each session usually lasting an hour.
- Confidential - what is said in sessions is private, (within the limits of professional discretion)
CBT can be used to help anyone irrespective of ability, culture, race, gender or sexual preference.
Types of problems treated:
- Emotional reactions to traumatic events:
- Anxiety and panic (sleep disturbance, panic attacks, social anxiety, self-consciousness, health anxiety, Irritable Bowel Syndrome);
- Depression (low mood, lack of motivation, depressed thoughts)
- Obsessions and Compulsions (e.g. excessive cleaning or checking)
- Anger and irritability
- Stress – home / work burn out
- Chronic fatigue
